The CVCC English and Math Placement test for seniors planning to apply to CVCC in the fall, and for any student planning to do a dual enrollment class next year such as machine shop, EMT, HVAC, Welding, MTA, and computer repair has been scheduled for Friday, March 6th.  The test will begin at 8:05 a.m. in the library.  There is no cost for the test.  Students need to sign up in guidance, apply to CVCC, and give your student id # to Mrs. Maxey by Friday, February 27th.

Attention 11th graders who had planned to attend the CVCC Open House last week to learn about the Machine Shop, Pre-Nursing, HVAC, Welding and EMT programs.  The Open House has been moved to Monday, March 2nd at the same time and place.  Please see Mrs. Dalton if you have any questions.

Rich Murray Sports Journalism Scholarship is presented annually to an outstanding graduating Virginia high school senior who excels in the area of sports journalism and must be pursuing a college degree in journalism, communication or a related field with the intentions of pursuing a career in sports.  The scholarship is in the amount of $1000. Applications are available in guidance.  Deadline to apply is March 25th.

Attention 8th and 10th grade students-this is a reminder to turn in permission slips for the field trip to the Campbell County Tech center on Friday.  Permission slips must be turned in by this Thursday, February 26th.

Today is the first day for softball tryouts.  All girls staying for softball should meet in Coach Smith’s room directly after school.  Come to his room before going to your car or getting dressed.

All boys in grades 8-12 who are trying out for baseball need to meet in the M.S. Gym immediately after school today.

Any student signed up for February Driving Range needs to see Mrs. Martin today ASAP if you did not attend the morning meeting.

Coach T. Phares PE 9 & Mrs. Martin’s PE 9 & PE 10 should meet in the gym today.

Any girl interested in trying out for tennis needs to see Coach Sterne sometime this afternoon for a handout on start date and what is needed for tryouts.

To any senior who hasn’t turned in a baby picture for the slide show, please turn one in as soon as possible to Mrs. McGuire in room 110.

Attention junior and senior guys: Men’s Warehouse is offering a $40 coupon on tux rentals. Go to their website and sign up to receive this coupon.

Attention juniors and seniors: There is a sign-up sheet for prom located on Mr. Cheatham’s door. If you are planning on attending, please sign up. Deadline to do so is February 28th.

Attention seniors: Please sign up on Mr. Cheatham’s door if you are interested in going on the senior trip to Kings Dominion May 29th. Details will follow later. We need a head count.

Attention 6th and 7th graders- Are you interested in a medical careers camp this summer? If so, please see Ms. Pugh in Guidance for a flyer. The camp will be held at VA Baptist Hospital from July 27th – July 31st. The deadline for applications is April 20, 2015.

Robert Godsey Memorial Scholarship is in the amount of $500 and will be paid directly to the college for one William Campbell senior who has played baseball for the Brookneal Dixie Youth League and meets the criteria.  Criteria to be considered for this award will include academic performance, participation in school/community activities, previously played Brookneal Dixie Youth baseball, and financial need.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Deadline to return application to guidance is April 20, 2015.

Virginia Bankers Association Bank Day Scholarship Program will award six Honorable Mention Scholarships, six Regional Scholarships and one Statewide Scholarship on the basis of essays. Applicants will be required to spend the day at banks across the Commonwealth shadowing a banker in their daily duties. The purpose of this is for the student to learn about banking, financial services, and the vital role banks play in their communities. From their experience the students are required to write an essay on the topic “How Banking Benefits My Community”. Seniors must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply. To be considered for Bank Day you must sign up in Guidance by March 11th.

Ralph & Mitchell Walker Scholarship will be in the amount of $2500.  The scholarship(s) will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who meet the criteria.  Applicants must be residents of southern Campbell or northern Pittsylvania Counties , have a minimum of 2.5 GPA and score above the 50th percentile on either the SAT or the ACT, and planning to attend a two or four year institution.  Applications are available online.  For more information see Mrs. Maxey in guidance.  Deadline to apply is 5/1/2015. 

Southside Electric Cooperative would like to invite interested students who are juniors or seniors in joining them for a day of exploration into the profession of an Electric Lineman.  The event will take place at the Altavista District Office on March 17th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Students who are interested in this career are encourage to attend.  Please see Mrs. Maxey in guidance by Feb. 27th if you would like to sign up for this event. 

Virginia Association of Women Judges will award a $1000 college scholarship to a graduating senior who submits the winning essay. The competition involves the submission of a five hundred word essay on the topic of, “What are the benefits of the participation of women in the legislative and judicial branches of government”. Entry forms are available in Guidance.  Deadline to submit the entry form and essay is March 25th.

The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth will award a minimum of two $2000 scholarships annually. The scholarship funds are available to students who are homeless or who have been homeless during their school attendance and who have demonstrated average or higher than average achievement.  Applications will be accepted from January 1 to June 19, 2015 and can be downloaded from the NAEHCY website.  See WC’s scholarship page for more details.
