Very Important: This is a reminder to AP students who qualify for a fee waiver on AP exams: You MUST turn in the waiver form by Monday to Guidance. If you do not turn it in by Monday you will need to pay the full exam fee of $91.

Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Basketball team on their win over Central Lunenburg. The final score was 32 – 26. Taniya Roberts led the team with 12 points.  Both Kaisha Knight and Parris Elam had 7 points. Annie Motley had 6 points. It was a total team effort. Great Job!

Students take the CVCC Placement test scheduled for February 6th are reminded that you must apply to CVCC first in order to get a student ID which is required for testing. Information for applying can be found under the CVCC section under our school counseling portion of our website. See Mrs. Maxey if you have other questions.

Attention juniors and seniors: There is a sign-up sheet for prom located on Mr. Cheatham’s door. If you are planning on attending, please sign up. Deadline to do so is February 28th.

Attention seniors: Please sign up on Mr. Chatham’s door if you are interested in going on the senior trip to Kings Dominion May 29th. Details will follow later. We need a head count.

Calvary Baptist Church has three $500 scholarships to award. Seniors who are graduating from Altavista, Gretna, Faith Christian, Rustburg or William Campbell may apply. Applicant must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Three letters of recommendation and an essay are required. Applications are available in Guidance and should be returned by March 30.

AAUW-Lynchburg Branch of the American Association of University Women will award three scholarships in the amount of $2500 each.  Applicants must be a female student of traditional age or a returning adult woman. Selection will be based on the student’s potential for academic success as well as their financial need. Two letters of recommendation and an essay is required.  Applications are available in Guidance and should be returned by March 25th.

Stop by Mrs. Cuellar’s room (204) every morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. to purchase a fishtail bracelet for $1.50.

Softball workouts will begin on Tuesday, January 27th and run each Tuesday and Thursday until February 19, weather permitting. Workouts will run from 3 – 4:15. You must have a current physical on file and have a ride each day by 4:30. Please dress appropriately for the weather. We will be outside. Workouts are open to any girl, grades 8 – 12, interested in playing softball and not currently involved in another sport season. If you have any question, please see Coach Smith or Coach Rutledge.

Granville P. Meade Scholarship is based on financial need and merit.  Applicants will need to demonstrate academic achievement, extracurricular activities, good character as determined by letters of recommendation, and financial need.  Applications are available in Guidance and should be returned to Guidance no later than February 27th.

Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund will offer a $2500 scholarship to a senior based on need, academics, community service and writing skill.  An essay of 500 – 1000 words and two letters of recommendation are required. Applications are available in the Guidance Office and should be returned to Guidance no later than March 25.

Brookneal Woman’s Club in partnership with The Brookneal Presbyterian Church will offer a $1000 scholarship to a William Campbell senior. Criteria is based on academic performance, participation in school/community activities, and financial need. Transcript, letter of recommendation and an essay is required.  Applications are available in the School Counselor’s office and should be returned by May 1st.

Miller-Motte Technical College will be offering Shadow Day on Wednesday,  February 18. High school seniors interested in any program that we offer will have the opportunity to mingle with students, get to know program directors, participate in labs, and special projects.  Lunch will be provided. University of Virginia is offering a new and exciting opportunity for Virginia’s high school students.  Rising juniors and seniors are eligible to participate in UVA’s Leadership on the Lawn summer leadership program, developed to strengthen the leadership skills of students who have displayed leadership interest and potential in your school and community. The program will run from July 12-July 17, 2015.  The cost is $1000.00. Applications and information about the program can be found at www.leadershiponthelawn.com. The application deadline is May 1st.

Looking for an adventure for this summer? Take a look at Hollinsummer, a residential program for high school girls, July 19-25 and July 26-August 1.  The program is a great combination of learning and fun, on one of Virginia's most beautiful campuses. Attention 6th and 7th graders- Are you interested in a medical careers camp this summer? If so, please see Ms. Pugh in Guidance for a flyer. The camp will be held at VA Baptist Hospital from July 27th – July 31st. The deadline for applications is April 20, 2015.

The CVCC English and Math Placement test for sophomores who plan to apply to the Early College or STEM programs, seniors planning to attend CVCC in the fall, and any student planning to take a dual enrollment class next year such as Machine Shop, has been scheduled for Friday, February 6th. The test will begin at 8:05 in the library. There is no cost for the test and students need to apply to CVCC prior to testing. The deadline to sign up in Guidance is Friday, January 30th.
