Today's Autism Awareness spotlight lands on Anthony Ianni. Ianni is the first person with autism to play Division I basketball. When Anthony Ianni was first diagnosed with autism, doctors told his parents that the condition ultimately meant he would never achieve much in his life. According to those doctors, Ianni would barely graduate from high school, never go to college, and certainly never become an athlete. Ianni did complete his education from Michigan State where he played basketball. He played in and his team won two Big Ten basketball championships. Although Ianni struggled with his autism as a child, he is now a highly sought after motivational speaker and autism advocate.

For this week's Autism Awareness announcements, we will learn about a famous individual with Autism each day. Today we highlight Dr. Temple Grandin who is a professor of Animal Science and Influential Autism spokesperson. She was mute up until the age of 3 and a half. She was diagnosed with autism and learned to speak because of a speech therapist. When she was young, she was considered weird and teased and bullied in high school. The only place she had friends was activities where there was a shared interest such as horses, electronics, or model rockets. As and adult, Dr. Grandin has written several books. She makes public speaking appearances to bring awareness of Autism to others.

Congratulations to Lacey Cox, Julie Jennings and Mackenzie Crook for winning their singles tennis matches against Nelson County yesterday.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, stop by the "Design your Own Puzzle Piece" table that will be set up in the lunchroom today. Make your puzzle piece colorful or write kind and encouraging words on it. Puzzle pieces will be put on display for all to enjoy.

The puzzle piece has become a prominent symbol associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the autism community. Here are some of the key meanings and reasons behind the puzzle piece symbol for autism: Represents the complexity and mystery surrounding ASD. Like a puzzle, autism is a complex condition that people are still trying to fully understand and "put the pieces together." Symbolizes how every person with autism is unique. Just as every puzzle is made up of different piece shapes and colors, every individual with ASD is distinct with their own strengths and challenges. Suggests how people with autism may perceive the world differently. The scattered puzzle pieces reflect how those with autism may view and process things in a non-typical way. Today, we invite all students to design their own puzzle piece during lunches, to remind our students that we are all a piece of the puzzle here at William Campbell, and we ALL belong.

April 18, 2024

Do you struggle with ADD or ADHD, do you ever get depressed or have anxiety? These can be really hard things to deal with for a person that does not have autism, so just imagine what a struggle it could be for someone who does! It is common for people on the spectrum to also have one of the issues that were mentioned. Even a small amount of kindness and compassion shown can help kids with autism feel better. April 2nd was National Autism Awareness Day. Since we were on Spring Break on that day, we will observe Autism Awareness Day TOMORROW by wearing blue.

April is Autism Awareness Month. Most people with autism are just like you when it comes to wanting friends. Some kids with autism find it hard to make friends while others don't. Many people with autism struggle with making eye contact and social skills. Reading facial expressions and body language does not come natural to kids with autism. Your patience and understanding when chatting with a person with autism is kind and can help that person get better at social skills. April 2nd is National Autism Awareness Day. Since we were on Spring Break on that day, we will observe Autism Awareness Day this Friday by wearing blue.

As mentioned Friday, autism is a spectrum disorder. Autism is diagnosed by recognizing difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Some infants and toddlers begin to develop typically until the second year of life, when they lose skills and develop autism -- this pattern is called "regression." It is important to remember that it is never too late to get help. The more assistance to improve any skills is helpful.

Here is your daily fact about autism. Autism is officially called Autism Spectrum Disorder or some people may just refer to it as ASD. So what is a "spectrum disorder?" Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the name for a group of developmental disorders which includes a wide range, or "a spectrum," of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability. In a nutshell, spectrum means that some people are mildly impaired by their symptoms, while others are severely disabled. Really it's just like anyone else who has strengths and weaknesses.

I am sure you have heard adults mention how expensive it is to raise a child. Autism costs a family around $60,000 a year on average for services such as speech, physical and occupational therapy. There is no medical detection for autism. Being friendly, patient and including kids with autism socially, is like free social skills class for the family!

Last week was National Paraprofessional's Day and we would like to take a moment to recognize our wonderful team of ladies, Mrs. Callaham, Mrs. Critzer, Ms. Gaddy, Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Davis. Our paraprofessionals are the unsung heroes behind the scenes, working tirelessly to ensure the smooth operation of our classrooms, providing invaluable assistance to our teachers, and creating a nurturing environment where every student can thrive. Their commitment to our students' success and well-being is truly commendable and their impact extends far beyond the classroom. Whether they are assisting with lesson preparations, providing one-on-one support to students, or lending a helpful had wherever it is needed, our paraprofessionals play a pivotal role in shaping the educational experience of our students. Their compassion, dedication, and unwavering support do not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated individuals as part of our team. Please take a moment today to extend your gratitude and appreciation to our paraprofessionals. Happy National Paraprofessional Day and a big thank you to Mrs. Callaham, Mrs. Critzer, Ms. Gaddy, Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Davis.

Last week was also National School Librarian's Day. We would like to take a moment to recognize our librarian, Ms. May. Her dedication to fostering a love of reading and supporting academic endeavors has left an indelible mark on each one of us. Whether it's recommending the perfect book, assisting with research endeavors, or creating engaging library programs, Ms. May goes above an beyond to ensure that our library is not just a room filled with books, but a sanctuary of exploration and discovery. Please join me in extending warm wishes and heartfelt thanks to Ms. May for her outstanding service, dedication, and enthusiasm. Happy National School Librarian's Day and thank you, Ms. May!

Did you know that autism is one of the fastest growing developmental disorders in the U.S.? Autism now affects 1 in 68 children and out of those 68 kids, 1 in 42 are boys. Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism. Scientist don't know why boys are more highly affected. With numbers that high, there is a very good chance that you could have someone with autism in your family one day, if you don't already

At William Campbell, we want all students to feel safe and welcomed in their classes. The negative impacts of bullying can lead to many students not wanting to attend school and feeling alone and isolated. Over the next several days we will focus on how bullying can negatively impact students as well as what we can do to end those negative effects. Did you know that more than half of bullying situations (57%) stop when a peer intervenes on behalf of the student being bullied? Get involved! Join a team or club. Students who are connected and feel valued have a greater sense of belonging and confidence. Not sure of what you like? Just try something new, you never know if you will like something until you try.

Today is a special day here at William Campbell, as we take a moment to recognize and appreciate the hard work and dedication of the unsung heroes who keep our school running smoothly day in and day out -- our custodians! Custodian Appreciation Day is a time for us to express our gratitude for the tireless efforts of these amazing individuals who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure that our school is a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all of us. From the early morning hours before any of us arrive, to the late evenings long after we've gone home, our custodians are on the front lines, tackling the many tasks that often go unnoticed. They sweep and mop our floors, empty trash cans, clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, and common areas, and so much more. They are the silent guardians of our health and well-being, and we are truly fortunate to have such a dedicated team.
